Towards human-like behaviour in spoken dialog systems

چکیده
We and others have found it fruitful to assume that users, when interacting with spoken dialogue systems, perceive the systems and their actions metaphorically. Common metaphors include the human metaphor and the interface metaphor (cf. Edlund, Heldner, & Gustafson, 2006). In the interface metaphor, the spoken dialogue system is perceived as a machine interface – often but not always a computer interface. Speech is used to accomplish what would have otherwise been accomplished by some other means of input, such as a keyboard or a mouse. In the human metaphor, on the other hand, the computer is perceived as a creature (or even a person) with humanlike conversational abilities, and speech is not a substitute or one of many alternatives, but rather the primary means of communicating with this creature.

Data-driven models for timing feedback responses in a Map Task dialogue system
Traditional dialogue systems use a fixed silence threshold to detect the end of users’ turns. Such a simplistic model can result in system behaviour that is both interruptive and unresponsive, which in turn affects user experience. Various studies have observed that human interlocutors take cues from speaker behaviour, such as intonation, paralanguage, content, and gestures among others, to coo...
متن کاملOlga - a conversational agent with gestures
The Olga project has developed an animated agent interface for information services. The interface combines a graphical interface, spoken dialogue and an animated 3D ‘human-like’ character for multimodal input and output. The interaction is intelligently managed using techniques derived from spoken dialogue but extended for the graphical modality. The Olga agent is innovative in combining a spo...
متن کاملProsody change and response timing analysis in spontaneously spoken dialogs and their modeling in a spoken dialog system
If a dialog system were to respond to a user as naturally as a human, interaction would be smoother. Imitating the human prosodic behavior of utterances is important in computer-human natural conversations. In this paper, to develop a cooperative/friendly spoken dialog system, we analyzed the correlations between F0 synchrony tendency or overlap frequency and subjective measures: “liveliness,” ...
